Basil Simple Syrup

Made with fresh basil leaves, this herbaceous syrup brings earthy, peppery sweetness to summer cocktails and mocktails. Perfect with gin, vodka, or rum, and pairs beautifully with strawberries, peaches, lemon, watermelon, and mango.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves

Instructions
 

  • In a small saucepan, combine the water and sugar. Bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  • Reduce heat and add the basil leaves. Simmer for 1 minute.
  • Remove from heat and let the syrup steep for 30 minutes.
  • Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a sterilized glass jar.
  • Discard (or compost!) the basil leaves.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to a week or freeze it for later use.
