Girls just wanna have fun, and that could never be more true than when you get a group of gals together to celebrate their friend who is about to get married. We tease, we gossip, we giggle. It’s all good fun. If we can do it in a rehabbed industrial city like Portland, Oregon then we know we are in for a festive time.
Portland serves up a colorful backdrop for a bachelorette party or a simple girls’ getaway. There is no question that there is great food, but did you know there is also shopping (tax-free in Oregon!), and spa treatments that can make you forget your cares for an hour or two.
It’s not easy to plan a large group girls’ weekend though. It takes extra thought, coordinating everyone’s likes and schedules, and above all, remaining flexible when plans (and moods) change. Hop along on the gal pal train as I dissect what goes into a great female-only escape to Seattle’s southern sister.

Tips
- If you have more than 2 friends traveling, put one person in charge. Everyone can have input, but one person can keep track and make sure all of the details are sorted before you leave.
- Know ahead of time if it is OK for everyone to wander off on her own, or in smaller groups, or if everyone should be sticking together.
- Plan for downtime, or the option for downtime. Some may want to sit in a coffee shop while others want to continue shopping or sightseeing
Apps for Planning and Sharing Expenses
- Tab (Free): Snap a picture of the bill and tag the items you ate/drank. Tax and tip are calculated for you. No more complicated math equations!
- Splitwise (Free): This app helps you figure out who paid for what and how much is owed to whom at the end of the weekend. You can add hotel bills, theater tickets, tips, etc. to the app and never have to “owe” your friends again.
Social Media Fun
If you have a group of gals who are totally plugged in why not create a hashtag that you all use so you can follow each other’s photos and share with more friends and your family back home? #PDXGirlsGetaway or #PortlandGirlsWeekend are long but get your point across.

Great tips! How do you decide where to go? I think that’s what my friends and I stumble upon the most. We can’t pick. What make you pick Portland? Do you make it an annual trip?
Great questions Amy! And you are making me think a follow up post is in order for this one. Portland is a not brainer. It has tax free shopping, is a bit sunnier and warmer than Seattle, but is an easy 3 hour drive. After our last trip, we do think we will be going down more often to explore and get pampered, but I also have California on my mind for the next girls getaway.
WOW – that sounds so magical. But what did you do with your boys? We would love an adult weekend but no-one is keen to look after our family!!!
Actually a girly weekend sounds so very nice 🙂
My favorite tips? Girls getaways aren’t something my friends’ are normally up for, but then we are a bit older. 🙂 I’m more apt to do things with my friends one on one. A quick afternoon spent browsing antique stores & grabbing a bite to eat, etc.
Also, many of my friends’ don’t know each other and I’m not sure some of them would even like one another. 🙂 In that case, I guess I’d suggest that everyone try to plan to get together and spend a day shopping together before the big trip if at all possible just to introduce one another and make sure personalities mesh.
I do the same thing with a group of girls I met through blogging each year – we go to a different “host” city. So much fun!
Love the app suggestions – those are great!
Thanks for linking up!
Sounds like a great weekend! I love the hashtag idea – so much fun!!
Sign me up!!!! Looks like the perfect weekend away with the girls. I might need you to repeat it with me when we come to Seattle!
What a great plan for a memorable weekend. You’ve pretty much thought of everything and have taken out all the “guess work”. Thanks so much!
Keryn, you are obviously a very organised person and the one to take charge. Itinerary sounded and looked great.
you all look so pretty & it sounded like SO MUCH FUN!! i love the RECEIPT NINJA app just for the name alone. so clever!!
Looks like a fun weekend! Portland is still this city that intrigues us but we’ve yet to visit! Need to get up there soon!
So many things here I wouldn’t have thought of. Looks so FUN!
Great tips. I’ll have to put these to use on our next trip with friends!
Great tips, Keryn! I love those app suggestions.
